Apple’s iPhone 5 may come with larger screen and thinner profile

Apple may equip its fifth-generation smartphone, the iPhone 5, with a larger screen and thinner profile to allow it to take on Android devices.

Several Android-based iPhone killers feature a minimum of 4-inch display. For example, the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S2 will have a 4.3-inch screen, while the Sprint and T-Mobile versions will feature a 4.5-inch screen. This is a matter of concern for Apple, whose iPhone 4 sports 3.5-inch display.

According to consumer website MacRumors, the potential iPhone 5 will feature a minimum of 4-inch display and will be 0.30-inches at its thickest.

The report claims that the next-generation iPhone design may have dimensions of 4.33-inches by 2.36-inches. The existing iPhone 4 has dimensions of 4.5-inches by 2.31-inches.

The consumer website said it estimated the dimensions of the potential smartphone from a purchased iPhone 5 case which measures 4.7-inches by 2.6-inches

Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 5 in October this year.
